Bishop's University offers a selection of more than 100 programs across 3 faculties and schools (Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Williams School of Business and the School of Education).

Bishop’s is located in the bilingual community of Lennoxville, a suburb of the city of Sherbrooke, Quebec, located about 1.5 hours southeast of Montreal. Job description:

Bishop’s University is seeking a Manager of Advancement for a regular full-time position. Reporting to the AVP Advancement the incumbent will support the infrastructure of the University Advancement Office and oversee activities related to annual giving, alumni relations, research, and stewardship.

The Bishop’s Advancement Office is responsible for alumni engagement, fundraising for University priorities, communications that support alumni and development programs, and donor relations. It is committed to promoting the interests of the University to its various stakeholders, building philanthropic support and ensuring Bishop’s continues to enhance its reputation for programming excellence and unparalleled students experience. The Manager of Advancement is responsible for managing the operations of the Advancement Office and supporting the University’s goal of becoming the best primarily undergraduate University in the country. This position has a work week of 35 hours from Monday to Friday with occasional evenings and weekends required.

Nature of duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, advice, and guidance to staff within the Advancement Office to establish objectives, set performance standards, and ensure accountability for short-term and long-term goals.
  • Manage the department’s budget, and proactively enhance and improve departmental efficiencies.
  • Assist the AVP in annual planning.
  • Provide direction and vision for data-driven modelling / decisions.
  • Act as AVP’s designate in her absence.
  • Ensure effective volunteer management that supports the objective of engaging alumni in meaningful volunteer opportunities and serving as a source for alumni talent and resources for students, faculty, and staff, as well as fundraising.
  • Assist with a small portfolio of donors.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships and programs with University units, including Admissions, Recruitment, Career Services. Athletics and Student Affairs.
  • Represent the Advancement Office on various university committee.
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourage knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and / or courses as directed by the AVP Advancement.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Advancement Office by working on special projects and performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the AVP Advancement.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (fundraising certification, such as CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) is an asset);
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the field of fundraising and alumni relations;
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience; including directing the workflow of professional-level staff. goal-setting activities, and process management;
  • Experience hiring, mentoring, and retaining staff;
  • A hands-on manager who can delegate responsibility, but who is also willing to and able, if required, to roll up their sleeves and get directly involved in the development of solutions;
  • Demonstrated relationship, conflict management and negotiating skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills;
  • Demonstrated project management, organization, delegation, and prioritization skills;
  • Strong ability to analyze, synthetize and manipulate data (ability to work with the Raiser’s Edge database is as asset);
  • Exceptionnal service orientation and customer focus;
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Fluency in English and French is required;
  • Experience working in a university environment is an asset.
