Philanthropy is an integral part of Alessia’s life, a value that she learned at a young age. “I started volunteering when I was young, philanthropy having been taught as a fundamental value at home and at school.” That’s how she took her first steps in the field, a path she has pursued with passion, particularly at the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation. This volunteer role marked the beginning of a career that led to running events for the Children’s Foundation. For Alessia, philanthropic commitment is a guiding theme: “Philanthropy has always been part of my DNA.”
Her academic path may seem surprising at first glance—but really isn’t! With a bachelor’s in chemistry and political science from Concordia University, Alessia was able to merge these two seemingly distinct fields and put them to work for her mission. “I can use my analytical, mathematical and “chemistry” brain to make strategic evidence-based decisions, and my diplomatic, empathetic, people-oriented, “political science” brain to build important relationships.” This combination of rigour and human sensitivity allows her to approach philanthropy from a unique perspective.
In the field of special events and community donations, Alessia has found her true vocation. “Having the opportunity to work with families and volunteers who choose to spend their precious time organizing events and raising funds for the hospital is a privilege that I don’t take lightly.” These events, often festive and sociable, are an opportunity for her to strengthen ties with donors and support essential causes.
As a member of AFP’s IDEA Committee, she advocates diversity and inclusion, values she holds close to her heart. “It was an important committee that I joined, especially with an eye to expanding the definition of diversity and inclusion.” Alessia fights for a philanthropy that’s more inclusive, attentive to the multiple and intersectional realities of the people she serves.
Her advice for those who’d like to get involved in the field? “Getting involved doesn’t necessarily have to be the same for everyone. Whether it’s in the form of time, money, energy or attention, everything has value.” She encourages everyone to contribute according to their means, convinced that every action counts.
Outside her philanthropic engagement, Alessia is passionate about cooking and is competitive at heart: “Most weekends, you can find me in an escape room.” She’s been able to marry her passions with her work by organizing cooking and baking blind competitions with her colleagues, proving that we can combine pleasure with work!
